Albert Ebenezer Fox and Ebenezer Albert Fox, AKA the ‘Twin Foxes’, were identical twin poachers from Symonds Green, Stevenage, born in 1857. Raised in a devout Baptist household, they turned to crime, amassing over 200 convictions for poaching, theft, and assault. Their uncanny likeness and alibi-swapping baffled police. While imprisoned, they helped Sir Edward Henry demonstrate that identical twins’ fingerprints differ, contributing to early fingerprint forensics. Ebenezer died in 1926 and Albert in 1937.

The Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) labs were built in 1963-64, to a mid-century modernist style and were a flagship testing space for the furniture industry. The bent plywood furniture designed by Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and Wells Coates was tested here for performance, flammability and safety.
