According to Victorian folklore, one day an imp was visiting Stevenage and being in a minxy mood, the imp decided to take slingshots at passers-by on the Great North Road. The imp scooped clods of earth from Whomerley Wood and aimed at the travellers. He missed six times, creating the mounds we now call the Six Hills. In a fit of pique, he flung the seventh clod across Stevenage. It hit the church spire in Graveley and it is twisted to this day.
At over 40km long, Stevenage built the country’s most robust and fully segregated road and cycling infrastructure. Promoting fair access to safe, healthy and sustainable travel, cyclists and pedestrians are separated from cars – a radical approach for the time. The generous 12-foot-wide cycleways and 7-foot-wide pavements linked homes to employment, green spaces, shops and services. How incensed would the imp be at these new passers-by?
