Jack lived in a cave to the north of Stevenage. When one year there was a poor harvest, the bakers raised the price of flour. So Jack ambushed the bakers, stole the flour and gave it to his friends. In revenge, the bakers caught him and gave him a final wish. Jack asked to be pointed in the direction of Weston, so he could shoot an arrow with his bow. Where the arrow landed, he wished to be buried. The bakers gave him his huge bow, which nobody else could pull, and he shot his arrow three miles into the churchyard of Holy Trinity Church, Weston, which is where he was buried and his grave remains today.
Queensway, became the prinicpal precinct of the post-war ‘Town Centre’ when it was built between 1956 and 1963. The first phase of shops opened in 1958 and the second five year later. Covered walkways protect shoppers from inclement weather with offices and flats above. Public transport was brought close to the centre with the bus station and railway station a few minutes’ walk away. Would Jack have been caught stealing from a bakery here?
