Born in 1847 to a family of famous actors, Terry began performing as a child, acting in Shakespeare’s plays in London, and toured throughout the British provinces in her teens. She gained critical acclaim for her portrayals of Lady Macbeth and leading lady Ophelia in Hamlet. Terry was considered the foremost Shakespearian actress in Britain in her day. She is the mother of Gordon Craig, after whom our theatre is named. Edward Gordon Craig, was born in Orchard Road, formerly Station Road, in 1872. The surname Craig was chosen to avoid the stigma of illegitimacy, as the cohabitation and children born out of wedlock were considered scandalous situations at the time.
Bowes Lyon House opened in 1964 and became Europe’s largest dedicated Youth Club. The most renowned bands and artists of the time played here including The Who, Status Quo and the Small Faces. But which Shakespearian play would Ellen Terry perform here?
